I’m Dunja (“Doon-ya”), the designer and maker behind Doonyaya.
I love making homes beautiful and inspiring. Small changes to a room like painting a wall or adding a graphic pillow can make a huge impact. Helping people bring unique, handmade items into their homes is what inspires me to keep experimenting and creating.
Every design starts with something I’ve encountered in my daily life – maybe the color of a traffic cone or the pattern of stacked cement blocks – which I expand on through sketches, xeroxes or print-runs. Once I intuitively know the design is complete, I screen-print each piece by hand in my barn-turned-studio, here in Upstate, New York.
I’m always on the lookout for new sources of inspiration or to learn new technique – creating is a constant process of experimentation. And the result is at the core of every Doonyaya design: an inspired pairing (like street art meets Scandinavian, or vintage patterns layered with modern hot-pink), handcrafted from eco-friendly materials. I believe that our planet is important and to be handled with care, which is why I donate 10% of all sales to animal’s rights organizations – making our homes and lives more beautiful should feel good in our hearts, too.
You can follow my blog for sneak peeks into my creative process – everything from ongoing experiments in art and interior styling to what goes into making my handmade housewares.
